Wing Chun, is a martial art system developed in southern China around 200-400 years ago and legend has it that this martial art system was created by a woman.
It is designed to be effective against stronger opponents and to be learnt in a relatively short period of time. Unlike many of the “harder” martial arts, Wing Chun does not rely on strength to overcome a stronger opponent. Instead, it relies on speed, agility, form and sensitivity of technique.
Over the years, Wing Chun has proven itself to be an effective and practical martial art, especially in close-quarter fighting. Since the movie gala of Ip-Man, it has gain much interest and popularity with many people wanting to learn and understand this martial arts.
Wing Chun forms teach good posture, flexibility, and coordination. When practiced slowly and correctly, they have an almost meditative quality that help calms the mind. Psychologically, Wing Chun can provide an outlet to relieve stress, conserve energy and enable relaxation. Many people find that learning Wing Chun can be extremely empowering, as it develops self-confidence and focus in life.
Furthermore, Chi Sau (Sticky Hands) is an excellent form of gentle controlled aerobic exercise which improves contact sensitivity and trains reflexes. During Chi Sau, one is required to switch off from conscious thought, which is both stress relieving and refreshing. General fitness, endurance and strength will be also be improved as you progress.
Much of the training is co-operative and it is not necessary to hurt your partner. The close range nature of Wing Chun allows you to break down barriers with other people, and training partners often become trusted friends.
