42-style Taichi Routine
In 1989, the Chinese Martial Arts Research Institute organised various prominent coaches and elite athletes from all over China to create a series of Wushu sports competition routines in seven area: Long Fist Boxing, Southern Style Boxing, Taichi Quan, Broadsword Play, Sword Play, Cudel Play and Spear Play. Among the routines created was the 42 Styles International Taichi Competition Routine.

While maintaining the individual Wushu tradition movements and underlying concepts, the standard competition routine in each of these seven areas were designed with competition features such as a prescribed number and sequence of movements to be completed within certain time frame, where they are made compulsory events in Chinese martial arts meets as well as other sports events such as the Chinese National Games, Asian Games, East Asian Games, Southeast Asian Games and ASEAN Games. In Singapore, these competition routines were also included in the yearly National Wushu Competition.

The 42 Styles International Taichi Competition Routine does not belong to any specific school of Taichi. Instead, it is a collection of all the gist from the various Taichi styles, which include the Chen Style, Yang Style, Sun Style, Wu style and Ba Gua Zhang. Hence, athletes are required to demonstrate an overall command of skills in all the various Taichi style. It is sometimes known as the "Combination Taichi Routine"

The entire 42 Styles International Taichi Competition Routine comprises of 4 sets of movements, which include various Taichi movements that require specific technical requirements, such as stability, agility, speed, power, flexibility and good movement coordination. This is to the competition more competitive. The whole routine is innovative in design and is structured in a very scientifically oriented approach.
