Introducing Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) is a quick and easy test that helps you discover your risk of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is an important health concern for both men and women. However, osteoporosis in women is triggered at an earlier age by the onset of menopause due to a reduction in the female sex hormone. Men are more likely to suffer from age-related osteoporosis and this occurs at a later age, usually after 60 years. In Singapore, osteoporosis is increasing as the population is ageing.
Men also need to take preventive measures before the onset of osteoporosis. Preventive measures are the same for both men and women.
0 - 20 = Moderate Risk
< 0 = Low Risk
Click HERE to find out what you should do to prevent osteoporosis.
WHAT DOES THE OSTA SCORE MEAN?
High > 20 | If your OSTA score is more than 20, your risk of having osteoporosis is HIGH. About 61% of individuals in the high-risk group have osteoporosis. Consult your doctor to have your bone mass checked. In addition to a diet with adequate calcium and regular weight-bearing exercises, you may require medicine to strengthen your bones. |
Moderate 0 - 20 | If your OSTA score is between 0 and 20, your risk of having osteoporosis is MODERATE. About 15% of individuals in the moderate-risk group have osteoporosis. See your doctor to determine whether you have any other risk factors. In addition to having a diet with adequate calcium and doing regular weight-bearing exercises, you may need to change your lifestyle (quit smoking, drink less alcohol) to reduce your risk. |
Low < 0 | If your OSTA score is less than 0, your risk of having osteoporosis is LOW. Only about 3% of individuals in the low-risk group have osteoporosis. However, if you have any of the risk factors below, please see a doctor. You still need to take a diet with adequate calcium and do regular weight-bearing exercises to maintain bone mass. |
